Bookworm Wednesday: Jimmy Corrigan, the smartest kid on earth
By? Chris Ware
About? The really heartbreaking story of a lonely lonely guy, called Jimmy Corrigan.
People who say that graphic novels (the serious word for books made out of pictures, comics if you want) aren’t literature, have never read Chris Ware’s Jimmy Corrigan, the Smartest kid on earth.
It’s been a while since i read it, but what I truly remember is that it made me feel so incredibly sad. You don’t read it if you just want to relax. I know that there a lot of people who avoid experiencing things that don’t give them a happy feeling, but what you get in return is a deeper sense of existence.. You learn and you absorb and every element makes you shift a little. Admit it: you don’t wanna be the guy to whom they say in 30 years: “you haven’t changed a bit!”.
Jimmy Corrigan is a sad and lonely guy who doesn’t know his father. And then he gets a message to meet him, which turns out te be a very sad meeting. Next to that there is the story of one of Jimmy’s ancestors during the World Fair in Chicago I think..Those stories run through each other and show how you can’t escape your destiny.
Ware has his own drawing style, which is in his miniature atmosphere very touching…
This is really one of the best novels of this century. But if you wanna laugh, you should read other stuff.Bookworm Wednesday comment below, or link to this permanent URL from your own site.
